My work explores many aspects of borders: what defines borders and what it means to have them. They can be real, imagined, political, and racial. One truth is that ‘Borders’ is a porous concept, but it can impact everyone and everything. It also seems to be a natural phenomenon not always recognized, but perhaps acknowledging, may get us to a better place. Borders, those invisible and those between opposites, are of particular interest.
I am a conceptual artist, who uses photography as one of my main mediums. Invisible Borders: Ubiquitous, series is an example of a recent work. Four photographs feature the apparent and ubiquitous pigeon. The bird is used as a metaphor to explore the borders between cultures and races in our society that are not seen. One photo shows a pigeon leaving a café in plain sight without being seen. Other photos show pigeons underfoot often unnoticed. The photographs freeze the pigeons in time so they can be studied. The work reveals that the obvious is often not seen, and this awareness may help towards a solution to one of our major issues today, social and racial justice. Ubiquitous borders can be invisible.
